It’s that time of year again! Indeed has revealed its third annual Top-Rated Workplaces in Canada list, based on over 1.3 million ratings and reviews on Indeed Company Pages.
Employee experience has always been critical – after all, people spend a lot of time at work, and they want an environment in which they can thrive. In recent years, however, this HR buzz term, “employee experience,” has gained more momentum as companies vy to attract top talent in an exceedingly tight labour market.
As a result, companies are increasingly emphasizing certain aspects that, when combined, offer a top-notch employee experience, including compensation and benefits, work-life balance, culture, management, and job security and advancement.
Now more than ever, job seekers are taking these factors into account when looking for their next job. How do they get this information? For the most part, they’re looking at third-party review sites like Indeed Company Pages. In fact, 90% of job seekers in Canada read reviews about a prospective employer before forming an opinion about them.*
The companies that have ranked on Indeed’s list of Top-Rated Workplaces in Canada this year are rated on their overall employee experience and represent reviews left by users between June 2017 and June 2019 on Indeed Company Pages. Let’s see who came out on top.
Another big win for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE)
It’s been a big year in Canadian sports. The Toronto Raptors won their first-ever NBA Championship, and the whole country relished in their victory. Now, MLSE, the parent company of the Raptors, has another big win under its belt – it has also ranked as Indeed’s Top-Rated Workplace in Canada.
There were many industries represented in our list. While the sports industry ranked first on our list, the hotel industry was also represented, with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts coming in at number two. The hotel chain is no stranger to Indeed’s Top-Rated Workplaces in Canada list, ranking number one in 2018. According to its site, Fairmont Hotels and & Resorts offers a “world of opportunity” – and, with Fairmont’s internal job posting program, they mean this quite literally. While employees are welcome to stay in one destination, they’re also encouraged to build their careers and transfer within the company’s various hotel brands. It’s a great incentive for those who wish to advance in their career – and see the world while they’re at it.
TD Bank rounds out the top three. It offers various perks to employees that help enhance their work-life balance, such as flexible work hours. Two of the other largest banks in Canada also appeared on the list, with CIBC and RBC coming in at number six and eight respectively.
The energy sector also made an appearance within the top 10. Husky Energy, at number four, keeps social responsibility top of mind. This is an important quality in any company, as an organization’s mission and values play an important role in job seekers’ decision-making process and employees’ workplace satisfaction. In fact, over one third of job seekers say that a company’s mission and values is one of the most important factors in making them feel more connected to a company they’re applying to.*
Two leading Quebec-bred companies, Vidéotron and Desjardins also appeared in the top 10. At number seven, Videotron is a leading telecommunications company in the province. While the company topped our Top-Rated Workplaces in Quebec list this year, this is the first time the company ranked on the nation-wide list. Desjardins, the largest cooperative financial group in Canada, came in at number nine.
Fluor Corp. is a global leader in the engineering and construction industry, with many accolades under its belt, including Indeed’s Top-Rated Workplaces in the United States list. Additionally, Fluor Corp. ranked among Fortune’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” list for 19 consecutive years and Ethisphere Institute’s list of the World’s most ethical companies for 13 consecutive years, and more.
Ericsson, a telecommunications company, rounds the top 10. Ericsson has been committed to creating innovative technology since its inception. In fact, according to its website, the company coined the term “smartphone” when it unveiled the GS88 handset – 10 years before the iPhone.

With a number of Toronto teams in its roster, such as the Raptors, the Maple Leafs, the Toronto FC, the Argonauts and more, whether you’re a football, basketball or hockey fan, MLSE delivers amazing experiences to its fans and, as indicated by their number-one spot on our list, employees, too. As such, it’s fitting that culture was consistently ranked as one of the leading qualities by employees on MLSE’s Company Page.
As one employee states: “[MLSE is] a great place to work with lots of room for learning. Workplace culture centres around Toronto-centric experiences and it’s nice to feel like you’re a part of the team and adding to that atmosphere.”

Since its inception, Fairmont has expanded its portfolio to include 70 hotels. The company also has a large Canadian footprint, having been formed after the merger between Fairmont Hotels and Canadian Pacific Hotels in 1999.
Fairmont hotels has received a lot of praise on its Company Page due to the opportunities for growth and the people who contribute to a best-in-class culture.

TD Bank is the sixth largest bank in North America by branches, with over 85,000 employees. While culture was the winning attribute on its Company Page, work-life balance and compensation and benefits were also mentioned as the best aspects of working at TD Bank.
As one employee says: “You could grow in your career and still have a balanced family life. For a mom whose spouse was often overseas for work this was great. Great support from managers.”

Husky Energy is hailed for its work-life balance, but importantly, the company is also recognized for its commitment to safety and sustainability as well as inclusivity.
As one reviewer says: “I am proud to have had the opportunities and experiences and training in the 26 years of employment. The company is highly diverse and encouraged personal advancement.”

For 140 years, Ericsson continues to work on cutting-edge technology, and the ability to learn and create is a key selling point on its career page: “We’ll help you design your future. You’ll help us design the world’s.”
Many facets of its employee experience are celebrated on its Company Page, namely the culture and people. According to one reviewer: “Great company, great people. As a whole you will not find a more friendly atmosphere where you can work and play.”

Third-party review sites not only offer transparency to job seekers, but give employers insight into what they’re doing well and areas in which they can improve to further enhance their employee experience.
