About the Event

As an HR professional it’s important to understand what diversity is, and how you impact diversity in your workplace. More and more, organizations are recognizing that diversity and inclusion is an expectation from employees and the communities they do business in. All too often the expectation to create a diversity policy, gain knowledge, and implement diversity strategies is tasked to the HR Team – but where do they go for the tools?

The Diversity Symposium is a full day learning session  for HR Professionals that will provide information, strategies and resources to implement into their workplaces to create a more inclusive and productive work culture. Read about the topics and speakers below.

About The Speakers and Sessions

Jeremy Holland with Prospect Human Services | Understanding Disability in the Workforce

This interactive workshop explores assumptions that surround and can impact individuals with disabilities in the workforce. It breaks down myths that commonly exist as well as providing a clear picture of the prevalence of disability in Canada. The session also presents the business case for organizations regarding the inclusion of people with disabilities and high level recommendations regarding language, etiquette and accommodation in a workplace environment.

Nicole Dyer & Cara Caey-Oloughlin with Vitality at Home | #metoo

With the #MeToo movement featuring so often in the news these days, it's important to discuss and review what it is and isn't about. Hear from a CPHR and Communications Specialist on how this move towards gender equality and safety for all has been a catalyst for change in our workplaces - focusing on policy review, investigation procedures and communication practices. With the changes to Alberta workplace legislation and Bill 30 review, they will walk through some key areas of your company's policy and ask probing questions to help ensure that your organizations are equipped to address concerns, complaints and crisis communications.

James Demers with The Calgary Queer Arts Society | LGBTQ 101

This workshop is an introduction to the language, context, and history of the LGBTQ2+ community, including resources for organizations, youth, teachers, and families. We use storytelling mediums and artistic endeavours to inspire thoughtful conversations that educate and strengthen communities and institutions.

Johnathan Red Gun with Community Futures Treaty Seven | Indigenous Inclusion in the Workplace

This session will open your organization to the opportunities to embrace inclusion as a business paradigm. The material represents knowledge to help you build partnerships with the Indigenous community and advance your business case for inclusion. The learning material will give you and your colleagues the knowledge and confidence to introduce and advance proven inclusion strategies that transform organizational behaviour and practices.
