In 2013, Dr. Ian Gellatly of the University of Alberta approached CPHR Alberta with the idea of creating an HR case competition for post-secondary students in Alberta. There was nothing specific to HR being done in Western Canada, so CPHR Alberta embraced the challenge. With strong assistance from a dedicated committee of post-secondary representatives, the first event was held at the University of Alberta in March 2014 under the name “CPHR Alberta Challenge”. Five teams from Alberta schools attended the event, with the team from University of Lethbridge taking home the first prize.
Riding on that success, the competition was held in March 2015 at Mount Royal University in Calgary. The event was renamed “HRC West” and it attracted seven teams to participate, including one from British Columbia (Okanagan College). This time around the winning team came from the University of Alberta. A number of sponsors attended the event, and the students enjoyed dinner and a guest speaker on the evening before the event.
For 2016, HRC West continues to grow! With ten teams from across the west (BC to Manitoba) planning to compete, we can expect an exciting event in March. Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton will play host this year. Sponsors, guest speakers, and judges are all being lined up to make this event the biggest and best yet!
The most exciting news is that the Human Resources Management Association (HRMA) of BC is now partnering with CPHR Alberta to bring this event to post-secondary students in the West. That development means that the 2017 competition will be hosted somewhere in BC.
With more and more teams expressing interest, we expect 2017 to be the biggest yet! The excitement and enthusiasm of the students, along with the fierce competition between schools makes this case competition one to watch.
